Tens seconds of looking at the immediate post-crash iphone video plus google maps street view of the crash site shows that they were heading eastbound TOWARDS the 90 degree bend and never made it. Of course that is far more work than a lazy NBC news correspondent can be bothered to perform.
It appears fairly likely IMO that at a minimum they left the show at AE Performance, made a right onto Constellation, another right onto Kelly Johnson where he opened the car up heading into the long sweeper onto Hercules and experienced the same thing the Stig apparently did for an entire morning and lost the rear end coming out of the curve too fast and went right into one of those street poles or trees or both.
Just looking at the dimensions of the road makes it even worse if you consider how fast he had to be going to cut the car in two like that. Extremely stupid. 
I have been in a similar wreck, but on track. Clean through the first 3/4 of a long double apex turn, then on exit the rear just slid out slowly but surely and the driver tried to gather it up but instead the car held speed as it continued sideways and eventually backwards into the INSIDE tirewall with enough speed to go up and over, airborne barrel roll, into a noseplant into the ground. Shit happens. That's why "take it to a track". We both walked away from a spectacular crash with nothing apart from a couple of superficial cuts for the passenger and an irregular heartbeat for the driver, and the record for the longest flight time for a 2003 BMW M3 in the state of Oklahoma. I imagine the skid marks leading up to the crash site are going to look a lot like these.
